Welcome to the TV Ate My Wardrobe Emmy red carpet coverage and after plenty of amazing pre-party looks the main event delivers on fantastic frocks, ladysuits and some eyebrow raising outfit choices. There are many outfits to discuss and so we have three posts offering up our highlights of the gowns, suits and those garments which are harder to categorize.

Maslany did joke that she wished her Bouchra Jarrar white tux was cutoff shorts instead (much like her Friday party outfit), in fact I don’t think she was joking as everyone appeared to be melting in the LA heat. The work of Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo was recognized with Washington presenting her with the award and after ditching Scandal this season, I just watched the mid-season finale and those costumes really are everything. This one had it all from the fanciest of frocks to incredible coats and an all important wine cardigan, plus the episode was also really great.

Attending the Worldwide Orphans Gala (of which Amy Poehler has served as an Ambassador of the Arts since 2013) they struck the balance between casual and fancy with Ilana’s matching crop top and skirt combo working like a charm and I am so here for Abbi’s floral wrap. Amy’s sparkly skirt is also super festive appropriate and this outfit also reminds me of how much I love/agree with Rachel Syme’s recent tights essay (although I would’ve gone with a different color pump).

Welcome to TV Ate My Wardrobe’s “Best of 2015” costuming series and rather than doing a straightforward countdown we’re going to do a variety of posts that look at which costumes and shows have made a huge impact this year. From items we want in our own wardrobe to pieces that got everyone talking; we want to celebrate the work of television’s best costume designers.

So far the Best of 2015 series has focused on in-depth costuming achievements from The Americans, Hannibal, Fargo and Mad Men. Plus a special You’re the Worst “Music Monday” end credits rundown.

Now is the turn of a huge range of shows we have been watching this year from network, cable and streaming with comedy, drama and all those other hard to categorize scripted offerings. There has been so many fantastic individual moments that we have had to split this post into two otherwise the scrolling would be endless.

What better way to appease the dragon that has done a runner than wear a necklace bearing a very familiar image and this comes in particularly handy for Daenerys in “The Dance of Dragons” when Drogon makes a very timely entrance. The influence of Daenerys’ heritage has been visible throughout the texture of her costuming which at times has been scaly in appearance. Yunus & Eliza designed this stunning piece (click here for a closer look) and it really is fit for a queen.

As with last year there have been a whole slew of leather jacket wearing stunners, but there is one lady who takes wearing this garment to every outfit level and that is Jessica Jones. Not pictured are the very 90s looking jeans that are also glued to her body pretty much all of the time and this signature look makes sense when the show takes a deep dive into her backstory.

Cookie Lyon has gone through a style evolution since she was released from prison going from matching animal prints to high end garments as she has caught up with trends and got accustomed to her wealth. One of my favorites is this Dolce & Gabbana polka dot blouse; perfect for a dramatic exit and a fun take on the tablecloth party trick. Cookie’s always going to eat.

Not only did Oscar Isaac take dancing in dad jeans to Bruce Springsteen to new levels, but he also worked this mustache in ways I did not think possible in Show Me a Hero. The mini-series from David Simon is terrific and devastating and not just for the 80s fashion. And even several months after watching it still makes my heart ache when I think about Oscar Isaac’s performance.

Of all the Mad Men characters who would embrace a new decade with some additional facial hair it really makes sense that it would be Roger Sterling. It could easily be kinda skeezy (and of course Roger has entered this territory on more than one occasion), but there’s also something elder statesmen about it and that’s what he is. And I would happily watch an endless loop of Roger and Peggy hanging out in their now deserted office.

Alleviating the awkward of the first time with cute top hat parlor tricks is Bertie on The Knick and it is all around adorable. While this is the most of Michael Angarano that we get to see, cable has embraced male nudity this season on a level we haven’t previously seen with both The Leftovers and The Affair showing far more dudes naked than women this year. Game of Thrones you have some catching up to do.

Season 3 of The Bridge (Broen/Bron) lost one of its main stars, but didn’t lose any of its quality introducing a new partner for Saga who turned out to be just as compelling (if not even more so than his predecessor – sorry Martin). Style wise the pair complement each other rather well favoring classic coats and boots for their crime fighting attire; Saga is still all about the olive leather pants and Henrik also tucks his trousers into his boots because who wants those flapping in the wind while running after a suspect.

There is plenty to love about Peggy Carter and season 2 is just a couple of weeks away! Agent Carter also gets added to the How TV Ate My Wardrobe list in the makeup department as I invested in Peggy’s Besame 1946 lipstick and there is also the bonus of beautiful packaging along with fantastic red lips.

So when Gina appeared on screen in the episode “Beach House,” which kicked off the new year for Brooklyn Nine-Nine in this hat/scarf/glove combo it also caused me to yell “Wolfie” on this occasion too.

Clik here to view.It is well documented that I have jumpsuit issues (more on myself than anyone else) and adding peplum opens up a whole world of potential concerns, but this Roksanda number (a brand we heart) is beating the odds and it might help that Tatiana Maslany is the one wearing it. The red pumps do clash with the colored waistband, but this is totally working for me.

I could barely walk in these Alaïa sandals in the best weather conditions and it would very much be a Bambi on ice situation. The rest of the outfit is terrific including the rose covered Victoria Beckham skirt and there are strong coat feelings going on right now. If only it was currently cold enough to wear outerwear like this.

This is another occasion of Kruger as the Magical Fashion Unicorn as I’m not sure there are many who could pull off this cutout vintage Roland Mouret ensemble and Joshua Jackson scrubs up nicely at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Let’s hope there is more of this in 2016.

Best TCA Pairing

In a sea of red carpets at this time of year Sundance stands out because heels are replaced by boots and wool is a predominant fabric. Plus the chance of sheer ruining an ensemble is dramatically reduced. Award season indulges in wish fulfillment aspects of fashion and the fancy pants levels are high; while I love the decadent and intricate details of gowns galore, there is something rather wonderful about the casual cool at the Sundance Film Festival.

What this boils down to is a combination of a several things including a love of all things winter wear – yes I have snow FOMO right now – with a dash of ‘stars they’re just like us’ and the kind of movies that are being showcased. Considering how many different knitted I am wearing right now (including leggings and long bootie socks) combined with how many sweater posts we have produced on TV Ate My Wardrobe it will come as no big surprise that I am in style heaven right now.

At the Joshy premiere Plaza goes for a cozy ribbed sweater delight paired with skinny jeans, black boots and the always wonderful Jenny Slate. Also killing it with her boots choice, pleated skirt and sweater tee.

At Kari Feinstein’s Style Lounge Amandla Stenberg gives a good style lesson in long dress chunky knits; performing the double of super cozy and funky all at once.

Plus what she thinks about the tone of Preacher:

“I really like that kind of oddness. Everything seems straightforward in Preacher but nothing is; everything is kind of askew. You’re dealing with this hyper unrealness—that’s what comics are—and I like that sort of twist.”

This time of year is great for someone who writes about red carpet fashion because a) there is so much and b) it is quite varied. There’s the glamour of award season, panel fashion at TCA and then there’s the Sundance Film Festival. TCA and Sundance are the closest to my personal style as many of the outfits worn are things I could see in my own closet; well I’d probably have a cheaper version.

Sundance also happens to take place in a location where it is cold and this also mirrors my current local as I’m pretty much head to toe in knits right now. It also feels very different to award season and at Sundance the clothes while most likely carefully chosen have a more carefree thrown together vibe and also consist of the most amazing coats. An instant win for me.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are the soothing beachside afternoon jaunt we all need before the hustle and bustle of the Oscars; this is always one of my favorite red carpets of the year.

The outfits tend to be a little more on the chilled out and playful side with both pattern and color out in strong force and while I love the dramatic glamour of the Oscars this is much more my speed. Plus the dudes in suits tend to step out of the usual classic comfort zone and this year is no different.

Clik here to view.Also at the HBO session, Sonja Sohn discussed Baltimore Rising, the new documentary she directed; detailing the manner in which the media sensationalized the protests that took place after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. Sohn is probably best known for her role in The Wire as Kima Greggs and on Sohn making this documentary, Wire creator David Simon said ““She’s come to love the city as if she was born there and she has documented something that’s very important.”

On reasons for making this documentary and why it is so important Sohn explained:

“The people of Baltimore are actually engaging in a much more sophisticated conversation than I was hearing or at least that the media was covering in other cities. So at that point, it was simply my love for the community, my love for justice and my mission… and I feel like my purpose is to make the world a better place and to fight for justice and truth and freedom.”

I’m currently catching up on Luke Cage and while it is only a fraction of the show, I’m really enjoying the interplay between Sohn’s Captain Betty Audrey and Simone Missick’s Misty Knight. At the panel Sohn’s got the ideal Summer TCA frock; a colorful maxi dress and sandals.Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.September is always a busy TV month and Broad City is joining the fall TV fray with season 4 premiering Wednesday, September 13. At their TCA panel Abbi and Ilana discussed how the current political climate has impacted the show with Ilana explaining:

“It’s not just casual, and if you’re going to talk about it, you have to clearly state your beliefs and where you stand ethically or politically. So our message is heightened and crystallized this year after our hiatus.”

Clik here to view.Bookending “Out of the Box” with ladysuits brings me so much joy, as does the new season of Insecure. The Cut’s profile of Yvonne Orji delivers on the photo and interview front and Allison P. Davis gives great insight into what the vibe of the Insecure set is like.

They discuss Orji’s stand-up career, religion and she points to something important about her character on Insecure, “Molly is not perfect and we allow her to be not perfect.” I’m really looking forward to seeing where things are headed for Molly and for a good look at the costume upgrades in season 2 head here.

It is mid-November and Golden Globe nominations are just around the corner—they will be announced Monday, 11 December—and as it is the 75th anniversary of these awards, there is of course a party.

And many of the people vying for nominations attended, because of course. A lot of them also happened to give some of the best performances of the year. Big trends of the night include bold prints and color, much to my delight. Image may be NSFW.

Sadly there was no Oscar nomination (though I am more bummed out for Michael Stuhlbarg), but he has been promoting Call Me By Your Name in Italy in Paris with co-star Timothée Chalamet and director Luca Guadagnino. There’s no English subs on the second part (so far), but it is worth watching even if you can’t understand everything.
